ADLG-ready Patrician Romans on eBay

Now is your chance to own some "as seen on madaxeman.ccom" Late Roman /  Dominate / Patrician Romans, as I'm selling on eBay this 250-odd point 15mm army which includes a full range of options to form several different variations of this popular and flexible force.

The eBay link is here

All the figures have been based and magnabased for storage and transit, and have been double-varnished (Army Painter + Testors Dullcote) for tabletop handling.

These guys were originally part of a much bigger DBM/FoG army now being downsized to split into 2-3 ADLG armies, as I've finally decided to bite the bullet and admit to myself that the trend towards smaller army size games is irreversible, and that I can't see how I'll be using this many figures again in the future.

So, the eBay route it is

There's a total of 141 foot + 48 mounted (so almost 250 "things" in total) - which means anything less that £250 is a bargain in my book.

The army comprises:

  • 2 Impact Cv  (Essex)
  • 2 Cataphracts  (Essex)
  • 2 LH Bow (Essex)
  • 2 Huns LH (Minifigs?)
  • 6 Mounted Foederate Cavalry  (Khurasan's Gothic & Sarmatian ranges)
  • 4 Foederate foot (Peter Pig)
  • 4 Legionaries (Donnington)
  • 4 Auxilia (Donnington)
  • 1 Auxilia Bowman (Donnington)
  • 8 LI bow (can be used as support for the Legions/Auxilia) (Donnington)
  • 1 Artillery (Essex)
  • 3 Commanders (Mixed manufacturers)
  • 1 Camp base

If you want to expand the army I am happy to either help point you at the exact figure codes or have a dig around in the rest of my collection as well to see if I can spare a few more bases to help you.

I can also arrange for collection at the BHGS Doubles or Warfare, or on a clubnight at CLWC in London so if you are a UK-based player those may be options to save on postage. If you're in Spain or Southern France, I'll also be at the Estella event in October.

Part of all bids will go to support SSAFA, the UK armed forces charity (Help for Heroes passes a chunk of the cash they raise onto SSAFA).

Post Industrial Decay & Fruit Based Drinks – Madaxeman.com plays ADLG at The 2016 Worlds

“The Worlds” – not the one in Derby, but the global historical multi-ruleset gaming tournament that traces its’ lineage back over a decade and which now was occurring up in its’ most glamorous location ever – Charleroi in Belgium.

This year an intrepid team of Central Londoners made the hazardous journey into post-Brexit Europe by trains, planes and automobiles to take on the world in the biggest and most multi-national competition at this year’s event – L’Art de la Guerre, featuring almost 50 players drawn from France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, the USA (and us...).

In 6 lavishly (or should that be laddishly?) illustrated match reports you can be astounded by the local architecture, amazed by the quality of painting of the opposition’s troops, puzzled by the near-complete absence of success for the 15mm Condotta army list that did do well in their previous 25mm outing at Devizes, and enlightened by the usual flurry of ADLG hints, rules explanations and insights.

With over 10,000 words, and opponents ranging from as far afield as Han China to as close as a Condotta civil war, these 6 perfectly formed match reports make compelling and convincing reading for anyone considering ADLG, especially those looking for evidence that a game with around 35 DBx bases per side has enough variety in list composition, tactics and general play style to offer repeated playability.

At the end of each report Hannibal is quite rude about my tactics (as usual), a few of the speech bubbles have swearing in them as well (which always goes down well on Frothers), and there is even multimedia accompaniment in the form of a post-event Madaxeman.com Podcast for you to download and listen to whilst painting your next army!

Read on to see how the Condotta did in teeny tiny 15mm scale playing The Worlds Most Popular Competition-grade Ancients Ruleset - ADLG at The Worlds 2016.

Gordon Bennett, it's El Sid! 5 more ADLG Reports

ADLG has reinvigorated a whole host of previously little-seen armies and figures, and next up on the rehabilitation trail are some Two Dragons Normans (and dubiously Viking-esque Almughavar morphs) who take part as a Feudal Spanish army in 5 games of 300 point large-army L'Art de la Guerre 15mm action at the 2016 BHGS Challenge.

Marvel at how these brave Norman-esque warriors emerge blinking into the light after so many years with flocked (rather than more modern grass tufted) bases.

Thrill as they double-base themselves to form ADLG units.

Gasp in horror as they still appear to have learnt nothing about tactics and planning despite their years of free time in which to study the classic military manuals.

And chortle with smutty delight as El Sid James provides the General's Commentary in all 5 match reports

Roll Call 2016 - Taking a Pontic punt at ADLG

As ADLG makes it's way onto the big boys table of UK competitions with a 16-player field for 15mm ADLG at Roll Call 2016, discover how Mithradates of Pontus manages to almost (but not quite) control his many and varied disparate troop types in 5 games against all possible flavours of Romans.

Yes, it's 5 brand new Match Reports, complete with rules hints and explanations for what might well be the worlds most popular Ancients competition ruleset right now, L'Art de la Guerre.

Photo Galleries back online

The 15mm Ancients, 10mm ACW, 10mm WW" and "Real Vehicles" galleries are now fixed, upgraded and secured...

If you are using Chrome as a browser you may still see a Google security warning before accessing the 10mm/Real Vehicle galleries, which I've requested be removed now I have done the update - so it should hopefully be gone in a few days.

(I also managed to "find" a lost database with more information that was originally included in the 10mm Gallery, which it now appears I managed to lose by making a typo in one upgrade cycle... so, if anyone out there knows about how to merge the contents of two SQL database tables, do let me know!)

Corvus Belli miniatures - listing updated

I've just updated the 15mm Suppliers listings for the Corvus Belli range, after the manufacturer suspended production "indefinitely" in Autumn 2014.

Vexillia have now bought up the entire current stock of 15mm ancient and medieval ranges from the manufacturer in Spain, so what Martin has in store is all that is left in the world basically.

The ranges cover/covered Marian & Imperial Rome and some related armies such as Spanish, Numidians, Kappadocians, Carthaginians as well as a well regarded 100YW range. The figures are sold in packs of 8, with 6-8 variants per pack that are compatible with Essex in size but can sometimes be touch more chubby and short - but also have a more variety and character.

Get 'em while they last... !

L'Art de la Guerre - new Ancients rules, reviewed...

A short battle report and review of the "new" (well, new to English translation, but actually the third edition) of L'Art de la Guerre Ancients rules is now on this site.

Hopefully it will give you a bit of a flavour of what seems a very enjoyable, familiar-yet-different set of rules.

Forget "300", this is 3000 !

There are now more than 3,000 pictures of figures in the 15mm Photo Gallery. This is number 3,000. Latest additions include the Lurkio Range.

New Medieval Figures from Donnington

I've just gotten my hands on some of the new Medieval figures from Donnington (due to be released at Salute 2009) - and very nice they are too.

100YW Men at Arms Swiss CrossbowsSwiss Spear Pike Halberdier

.

Having chatted to Damian at last weeks Doubles in Oxford, it seems these figures have been designed by a totally new sculptor for Donnington, so are a big step forwards from some of their other ranges. The figures themselves are compatible in size and bulk with the popular medieval ranges from Essex & Corvus Belli, but have more innovation and animation in poses than the Essex ranges. They even stand up very favourably when set against figures from my personal favourites, Mirliton and could be mixed IMO with any of these three manufacturers with no problems at all. The first 3 ranges on offer are 100YW, Swiss and Low Countries - so plenty of Men at Arms and halberdiers all round, as well as some longbowmen who will give the well-regarded 100YW Corvus Belli range a stiff challenge in the popularity stakes - especially as Donnington have nicked an idea from Peter Pig and slipped in a longbowman giving the Frenchies the finger!

Donnington intend to sell these new figures under a slightly different brand to the rest of their ranges (maybe "New Donnington" - which I suppose is better than renaming the old lot "Classic Donnington"!), and at a higher unit price. They still intend to offer the option to buy figures individually, but probably will offer unit-sized packs as well. There is a good variety in each range with at least 4 variations for most types of troops, and if they continue to allow you to mix and match their horses (of which there are 12 on offer in the 100YW range) when you buy the variety you can achieve could be very impressive.

Men at Arms100YW Men at Arms

The figures generally come with open hands, or at least hands that need to be drilled to accommodate spears or pikes, although some of the halberdiers come with cast-in weapons. Donnington intend to offer a range of weapons with the figures, maximising variety within each unit. The clever innovation with the range is visible in the above photos of the horse-less Men at Arms - the guys have been cast with a "Vamplate" (no, I didn't know what it was either) on their hands, which creates the hand guard part of a proper lance when its drilled through to take a metal wire spear - very cute!

Overall these look to be a really good range, and continue the recent trend of ever-improving 15mm figures with more "human" proportions, lots of variety and some genuine thought going into the poses to create more interesting units. There are plenty more pictures of these in the 15mm Photo Gallery (search for "New Donnington" in the "manufacturer" field) - and I'll be adding more as I get to take some photos of them. Details of procing etc haven't been released yet, but if you contact Donnington or go along to see them at Salute I'm sure you will be able to get hold of some soon!
