The Plastic Crack Podcast

I was kindly invited onto the Plastic Crack Podcast on Monday night as a guest, and had a great time chatting nonsense about all things wargaming-related to the guys.

During the chat quite a few "Madaxeman" and also "Britcon" things came up, so I thought it might be handy to try and pull together some links here so that anyone who hears or sees the podcast and then stumbles across this site will not have to rummage around in the metaphorical bits-box that is Madaxeman.com's menu structure to see what on earth I was taking about!

In no particular order therefore:

  • 28mm Successor Phalanx, a painting and building guide
  • A recent battle report, featuring the army of Spartacus, plenty of speech-bubble soldiery, and with commentary from Hannibal as well at the end of each report
  • A mercifully short "highlights package" from the Madaxeman Podcast in which we run through an episode of "I'm Sorry I think You're An Arse" while discussing whether GW paint names have just gone too damned far.
  • Who Played What, the 2023 review of the UK Ancients competition circuit
  • A link to the Madaxeman YouTube Channel
  • Evidence that I do base AFVs in 10mm and below, (in what was also perhaps my last ever Arrowhead order..)
  • Rigging Hell! , the Windy Ships starter set and a lot of black cotton
  • Victrix Galatians, with waterslide transfers from Battle Flag

  • The BHGS/Britcon stuff is also here:

    Enjoy!

    28mm Successors: Gallic Cavalry

The Successor armies all tend to get 1-2 units of Gallic cavalry, and as I have the bones of a Galatian army anyway now (OK, 3 bases of infantry) adding some Victrix Galatian cavalry seemed like a great idea.

    And, here they are:

These as usual have a combination of Battle Flag waterslide and some LBMS sticker shield patterns.

I did also somehow manage to fit them on 60x50 bases in a way which means they can stand side by side as 2 units in a block - which was quite a challenge!

I stll have sprues for 6 more cavalry to make - its just a shame they don't have unarmoured and armoured torsos on the same spue really, but maybe that's a conversion job for the future?

28mm Successors - some more Galatian infantry

As part of the latest batch (before I dive into doing 48 pikemen!) I added another base of Galatian infantry to the army I'm assembling.

These Victrix guys come out so well that I really don't see how I can resist getting a whole army.

I probably have enough Thracians to make an ally for them, and having seen that you get 3 chariots in a set from Victrix too the temptation may be too strong to resist for long!

Painting 28mm Successors from Victrix: The Light Troops

I've finally managed to get some of the 28mm Victrix Successors I previewed in a half-painted state a few weeks ago finished, and into the light box for some professional-grade (ahem) photos.

The context to this is that I'm building my first ever Successor/Alexandrian 28mm army, and so with a huge range of troops to choose from in Successor armies I didn't want to do my usual "try and make and spray the whole army in one go" thing, but instead break the task down into manageable chunks that I could stay motivated to complete - hence deciding to start with the "light" troops

That ended up meaning that my first (OK second - I have completed and taken photos of some test bases before now) batch of figures for this army ended up being Light Infantry, Javelinmen, Peltasts and a couple of bases of Galatian crazy heavy infantry (because, well, they are really cool figures.)

And, the results are now in, with this smattering of photos plus a whole lot more on the website :

The Successor painting page on the website has all of these and more, as well as some commentary on how I approached painting them in a "Contrast-plus" style.

    Another ADLG Game...

This time it's another usually rubbish army, the Galatians, who take on an enemy Carthaginian army in a very short battle report that features a really good curry.
