The Suits are here to see you now !

Mad as you like, and twice as dangerous, the Suit Wearers are the Military Orders of the Tlaxcalan army.

All of these figures are kind of dressed in the same suit - a bit like a crocodile onsie if I'm honest - but with a lot of bright contrast paints and drybrushing to pick out highlights I'm pretty pleased to have made them look as varied as they do.

Doing red "lips" aorund each suits "mouth" was a bit of a faff, but very much worth it IMO.

There were just enough back banners in the army pack to add one to each unit of 6 men.

Warriors in brightly dyes PJs' - who'dve thought it eh?

The Cortez-inspired Mercenaries

The Texcalans famously allied with Cortez and the Conquistadores (or perhaps "not" famously, as I suspect many folks believe that Cortez and a couple of dozen men beat the Aztecs on their own?).

In that alliance of Aztec-hating contingents were the Totomac levies and Chinantec levies, both of whom I have made by picking out some distinctive figures and conjured up a unit of each with little or no basis in historical reality - but at least they are colourful and can be easily distinguished from the other Tlaxcallan troops!

I decided to use these chaps as Totomac Levies, as they were so different to the orun of the mill Tlaxcallan warriors that I didn't feel they would mix in all that well anyway.

They have very exuberant head dresses, and I gave them all similar frilly-edged shields from the set that came with all of my purchase from Fighting 15s

There is more than a sniff of the Xenomorph about them in a weird way, but at least they are obviously different to the regular warriors.

These guys will play as Chinantec Medium Spearmen - they are all armed with spears, and I gave them a simple almost-plain blue shield as well.

Given all the other options in the army, they may be a little-used option - or I may even get two bases of Chinantec "pikemen" at a later stage if I can find any suitable figures to use.

With all of them in red (or pink) romper suits they are very much a distinctive unit.

Tlaxcalan Archers

The Tlaxcalan army has a decent number of bowmen (in ADLG at least), some of whom count as half and half mixed bow/swordsmen, making them vaguely decent in combat as well as proper shooting archers, and some of whom are Mediocre in quality too.

Without wanting to create zillions of slightly different bases, and end up only ever using some of them, I ended up basing up 2 sets of 4 units of bowmen, and mixing in some warrior figures onto the bases of 4 of those units - this means (I think) I can categorize them as any sort of mix of bowmen, rubbish bowmen, and mixed bow/sword shooters & combat troops and not overly confuse myself or my opponent.

These are the ones with "some"  warriors as well as archers on each base.

All of the archer figures do also have a standard pattern on their headdresses, which helps identfy the archers compared to the regular combat infantry (who are totally random and irregular in millinery).

These are the bow-only chaps, some of whom get low quality head wear as well.

South America Inbound

Having been a great fan of the Fighting 15's / former Black Hat ranges for ages, I have had a South American army on the to-buy list for a long time - and with the closure of Fighting 15's, and hence the potential loss of these excellent ranges (unless Ian sells them on) I decided now was the moment to invest in a new 15mm army.

Given some of my clubmates already have Aztecs and others, the one that looked a little left-out at CLWC were the Tlaxcallans - and the ADLG list has some interesting options for the list, even without the Cortez alliance so Texcallan / Tlaxcallan it was.

I've actually bought a shed-load of them, giving me all options (and probably more). but as has been my habit of late I've started with just a handful to try and get a feel for how they will paint.

I've ended up with a bit of a mix in real paints and Contrasts, starting with Contrast Darkoath Flesh for the flesh parts giving them a darker skin tone than the usual "Flesh" on my European figures.

These all have white loincloths, and a palette of bold intense, real paint colouurs in reds, greens and yellows (plus the odd blue).

The "armour" is a speedpaint though, the ever-reliable Aggaros Dunes, with a drybruch to pick out he texture even more.

The feathers were basecoated yellow, and they I gave them a "wash" of Contrast Yanden Yellow to give them more texture than the rest of the "clothed" parts of the figures.

For basing I have opted to only use grass tufts and foliage on my usual Rustons Woodstain'ed Builders sand + drybrush basing, as they won't appear alongside any other of my troops (who all have static grass) - aside from a handful of European Spanish of course.

The aim overall was to make them colourful, but with a predominance of red as this was apprently a Tlaxcallan colour. I may go harder on this approach with the basic warriors I think.

This lot are now intended to be Otomi mercenaries/allies, which may or may not be correct as now Fighting 15's have essentially closed their website its gotten rather hard to identify the castings and match them to what they are supposed to be.

Anyway, pretty much all of these guys have obsidian-edged 2 handed weapons, so they will work as a coherent and discrete set of figures compared to the rest.

Very pleased how they have come out, and this test batch has made me look forward to - rather than dread - painting up the rest of the army.
